What You Should Wear To A Yoga Class

Sometimes people can be shy and avoid signing up for certain exercises classes because they don’t know what to wear. Don’t let this keep you from getting regular exercise and making improvements to your life.

What To Wear

It is important to wear something that is comfortable that will allow for full range of motion, something that will stretch and move with you. Slightly form fitting clothing and athletic clothing with spandex is typically the best type of clothing for yoga because it will allow your instructor to see your alignment while you are doing the poses. This will help your instructor see if you are doing the poses correctly; if not he or she can help you adjust your pose so it is correct.

Really loose fitting clothing can actually be uncomfortable when practicing yoga. Because the poses will require you to get into a variety of positions your clothing can sometimes fall in an uncomfortable way or it can actually get in the way. A baggy t-shirt can also be very revealing as you go through the movements.

While there are special shoes made for yoga many people prefer to go barefoot. Going barefoot is usually the most comfortable and it allows you to get better traction and stability for a variety of yoga poses. You can also just wear socks, but sometimes they may cause your feet to slide during certain poses.

What Not To Wear

It is best to leave your jewelry at home. Jewelry can get caught as you are going through your poses and it can be uncomfortable.

It is also best to avoid wearing anything with a strong scent. Avoid wearing strongly scented lotions or perfumes to class as they can be a distraction for others.

Bring An Exercise Mat

Another thing you may want to bring to class is an exercise mat. Some studios will supply a mat, but you may want to have your own. An exercise mat will help provide cushion for greater comfort but it will also help keep your feet from sliding allowing you to achieve better form.
