Obesity, especially in children is growing at an alarming rate. According to a recent report in the New England Journal of Medicine, life expectancy in the United States may drop by 5 years if the current epidemic of childhood obesity goes unchecked. Beyond diminished quality of life, the health care costs associated with obesity and related diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers will add a huge financial burden to the state.
The National Nutritional Foods Association West (NNFA-West), applauds the California Legislature for its focus on serious health and nutrition issues facing our state. We encourage legislation aimed at improving the health and quality of life for all Californians.
